I hate monday mornings. I always feel like I could (or should) have been doing a lot more stuff than I actually did during the weekend, the days just flew by and, on top of it all, I didn’t get enough sleep. This morning, God knows why, I feel even grumpier than usual.
So, this morning I was listening to my ipod as usual, and I was thinking about randomness. Some people tell me that I read too much into things, that I always see stuff where perhaps there really isn’t anything to be seen, that I am too superstitious. It’s not like I go around looking for animals to kill so I can inspect their entrails like a haruspex.. But I admit that I tend to believe in a lot of things (some might say, bullshit).
Anyway, I was thinking.. is randomness really random? I mean, considering all the possible outcomes of a random event, how likely is it to get the result that you are hoping for? And I’m not just talking about probability theory and statistical distributions. What I’m trying to say is, if you do get that result, will it mean anything? How random can randomness really be?
If you care to know, I was thinking that if I put the ipod on random, and one song of 3 possible ones would play, then it would mean something. Then, if another song of about 10 possible ones would play as the next random track, it would mean something else. And you know, silly as I am, I was really hoping that this all would happen, although I knew that it wasn’t very likely, as I have about 100 tracks on my ipod at the moment. So when it *did* happen.. just in the way I had wished for, in that exact order, the first thing that came to my mind was: WOW! My second thought was: girl, you shouldn’t really play the so-called “randomness game” as carelessly as you do. And then, I started to really wonder.. and as hard as it will be for some of you to admit..
no, randomness isn’t really random at all
PS: Although I hate statistics, I do know my math and I just made a quick calculation.. The chance of this happening was 0,6%. Pretty slim, ah??!?
